My name is Steve Adams. I’m a writing coach, book consultant, and editor with years of experience, as well as an award-winning author.
In the U.S. and internationally I’ve coached and edited published, award-winning novelists, short-fiction writers; essay, and long-form narrative nonfiction writers; unpublished but dedicated working writers; and those new to the game who’ve always believed they had something to say, but didn’t know quite how or where to begin.
My many years of writing and analyzing a broad range of literary forms (novel, short story, essay, memoir, playwriting, screenwriting, and poetry) give me structural as well as intuitive insight into book and manuscript evaluation, and my study of, and in-depth exposure to, music, acting, dance, theater arts, and visual arts provides me a varying and flexible set of perspectives to approach the process of writing, as well as a range of methods to help my clients tap into their creative resources and organize their life for greatest productivity and success. Whether we’re working with concepts, structure, techniques for getting words to the page, prep for MFA applications, accountability, or just developing perspective on the writing life, I find inspiring, coaching, and mentoring writers almost as rewarding as writing itself. Thanks so much for visiting. Please look around and see if I could help you bring your work to the page. If not, I still encourage you to write. It’s such a privilege to live this life and tell our stories. Don’t waste it. Tell yours.
My short stories have been published in Glimmer Train, The Missouri Review, Chicago Review, Quarterly West, Georgetown Review, and elsewhere. My memoir and creative nonfiction has been published in The Millions, Willow Springs, The Pinch, Notre Dame Magazine, and elsewhere. I've also written craft and writing-life essays that have appeared in Glimmer Train’s Bulletin and Talking Writing. My fiction and nonfiction have been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and my memoir, “Touch,” was selected for inclusion in the 2014 Pushcart Prize Anthology and reprinted in the special 2018 Pushcart anthology, Love Stories for Turbulent Times. My essay, "Border Crossing" was selected as a "Notable Essay" in the 2016 Best American Essays.
I’ve won Glimmer Train’s Short Story Award for New Writers, The Bronx Writers’ Center “Chapter One” Contest, and had my fiction anthologized. I’ve been a guest artist at The University of Texas, judged writing competitions and grant applications, and been awarded an artist's residency at the Jentel Artist Residency Program, as well as scholarships to the Norman Mailer Writers’ Colony and the Cuttyhunk Island Residency. My plays have been produced in New York City and across the country.
I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BA in Theater and received my MFA in Creative Writing from The New School in New York City. I’ve studied creative nonfiction as a scholar at the Norman Mailer Writer’s Colony and creative coaching with Dr. Eric Maisel. My work has been used as a teaching text at major universities, as well as in the public high schools, and cited in the book, Beyond the Writers’ Workshop: New Ways to Write Creative Nonfiction, by Carol Bly.
