Steve Adams

Writing Coach, Editor, and Writer

My name is Steve Adams. I’m a writing coach, editor, and award-winning author.

As a writing coach I’ve worked with published, award-winning novelists, short-fiction writers, and nonfiction writers; unpublished but dedicated and experienced writers; and those new to the game who have always believed they had something to say, but didn’t know quite how or where to begin.

My many years of writing and analyzing a broad range of forms (fiction, essay, playwriting, screenwriting, poetry) give me structural insight into manuscript evaluation, and my study of, and in-depth exposure to, music, acting, dance, theater arts, and visual arts affords me a varying set of perspectives from which to approach the process of writing and the disciplines that support art. I find coaching writers a form of work almost as rewarding as writing itself.

About me

My short stories have been published in Glimmer Train, The Missouri Review, Chicago Review, Quarterly West, Georgetown Review, and elsewhere.  My memoir/creative nonfiction has been published in Willow Springs and The Pinch. I’ve written a craft essay that’s been published in Glimmer Train’s Bulletin. Both my fiction and nonfiction have been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and my creative nonfiction essay, “Touch,” was selected for inclusion in the 2014 Pushcart Prize Anthology

I’ve won Glimmer Train’s Short Story Award for New Writers, The Bronx Writers’ Center “Chapter One” Contest, and been anthologized. I’ve been a guest artist at The University of Texas, a scholar at the Norman Mailer Writers’ Colony, guest lectured at NYU, and judged writing competitions and grant applications. My plays have been produced in New York City and across the country.

I graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BA in Theater and received my MFA in Creative Writing from The New School in New York City. I’ve studied creative nonfiction as a scholar at the Norman Mailer Writer’s Colony and creative coaching with Dr. Eric Maisel. My work has been used as a teaching text at major universities, as well as in the public high schools, and cited in Beyond the Writers’ Workshop: New Ways to Write Creative Nonfiction, by Carol Bly.
